From the late 19th to the early 20th century, Samuel M. Nickerson occupied the mansion, now known as the Driehaus Museum, as a private residence. The Mansion's architecture and décor reflected the Gilded Age, a time of widespread economic growth and technological advances. In 2003, Chicago philanthropist Richard H. Driehaus founded the Museum and began a hefty five year restoration of the mansion, enlisting the help of over 40 restoration firms. Driehaus envisioned a refurbished, yet authentic version of the mansion as the home for his collection of European and American fine and decorative arts during the Gilded Age era. Renowned artists such as the Herter brothers and Louis Comfort Tiffany are featured in the Museum. The Driehaus Museum is closed on Mondays.
