In 1917, Houston's Greek Orthodox community was formed and in 1937, the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral was constructed. The Cathedral remains the center of Greek life in Houston, and plays an integral part in Houston's Greek Festival, held every October. At Greek Fest you will find live Greek music, dancing, a market set up within the Cathedral and of course, traditional Greek wine and dishes like gyro and spanakopita as well as sweet treats like baklava and Kourambiedes, butter cookies with almond and powdered sugar. Stay late enough at the festival and the longing to people watch intensifies, soak up the culture of Houston's Greek community and maybe even learn a dance or two.
